Iwai Laboratory

Our laboratory aims at elucidation of various phenomena of life,
from a viewpoint of chemistry, using knowledge and technology in the fields of organic chemistry,
physical chemistry, and molecular biology.
We are studying molecular recognition and reaction mechanisms of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) and proteins,
and hope to apply the results of our basic research to development of functional molecules such as medicine.
Our educational policy is to give students opportunity to have a broad outlook on both chemistry and biology through interdisciplinary
researches.

ABOUT

ABOUT

Since DNA, the genetic material, is an organic molecule, it is subjected to chemical reactions with both endogenous and exogenous factors in cells. The products are called DNA lesions, and they induce genetic mutations, which result in carcinogenesis and cell death. We have been studying the chemical synthesis of lesion-containing DNA and its application to molecular biology.
